Why should I join the Herdict Commons?

Joining Herdict Commons is a great way to interact with fellow members of “the herd” or Herdict Web users. By joining Herdict Commons, you can take participation one step further to comment on reports of inaccessibility (or accessibility) and discuss the “why, when, how, and who” with fellow users.

Can I participate anonymously?

Yes! To participate anonymously, click on log in at the top of the page. From there, leave all fields blank, and select “post as anonymous,” then click log in. You will be able to post anonymously.

Now that I’m a Herdict Commons member, what can I do?

Vote on messages: As a member of the community, you can vote on any message in a conversation except your own. Just click the up arrow (for a message that you find helpful, interesting, or positive) or down arrow (for a message that you find unhelpful or uninteresting). If you believe the message is spam (unsolicited advertising), abusive, or otherwise in violation of our Terms & Conditions, click the Spam/Abuse button. You may change your vote at any time.

Join a conversation: As a Herdict Commons member, you can reply to any message. Just click the reply button, type your response, and click submit. Your message will appear in the conversation right away.

Start a conversation: Do you have a question to ask of the other Herdict Commons members or something you’d like to say to the community? Go ahead and start a conversation by clicking here or clicking any “ask a question” or “start a conversation” link you see on the site.

What are the stars, colors and badges all about?

Name and reputation: Every Herdict Commons member starts with a reputation of one star (out of a possible five) and increases his/her reputation through participation in the community (e.g., visiting regularly, voting on messages, or contributing positively to a conversation).

Affiliations: These small badges indicate if a Herdict Commons member is a moderator or administrator of the site, or if s/he represents one of the site’s partner organizations (e.g., StopBadware.org or Consumer Reports WebWatch).

Message visibility: The higher a message is rated by the community, the darker it appears, and vice versa. This allows you to quickly scan through a conversation and to focus on the most valuable contributions. If you want to read a message that appears very light, simply point your mouse at it, and it will darken so you can read it.
